Lyle-Pacelli stays alive with a win over USC

Lyle-Pacelli sophomore Jed Nelson made big plays in big moments as the Athletics edged out No. 2 United South Central (13-9 overall) 4-3 in a Section 1A West elimination game at Seltz Field Tuesday.

Nelson, who scattered eight hits to get the win, converted a double play to end a USC sixth inning rally and he threw the tying run out at home in the seventh inning before striking out USC’s Jacob Stevermer to end the game.

Sophomore Jakob Lazar had the big bat for the Athletics (14-9 overall) in the No. 9 spot as he doubled in a run to put LP up 3-1 in the sixth and he singled in a run to put lP up 2-1 in the fifth.

USC committed five errors and it had four runners thrown out at home plate.

USC started the day by ending the season for Blooming Prairie (8-14 overall) in an 11-1 win.

LP will open Section 1A Tournament play at Riverland 10 a.m. Saturday.
