The Austin boys tennis team had some strong finishes at the Big Nine Tournament in Rochester Saturday.

Joey Schammel rallied to win the consolation bracket when he beat Grant Herfindahl 4-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (10) for fifth place after losing to Herfindahl last week.

Austin’s No. 2 doubles team of Nico Forte and Gavin Owens also took fifth place when they beat Nolan Richardson and Hunter Luhman of Red Wing 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (6) in the consolation title match.

“It was the first time in quite some time that we have had this kind of success at the Big 9 tournament. It was a fun day and one that we can build on moving forward,” Austin head coach Jeff Anderson said. “We are looking forward to what Joey’s future is as he matures and betters his game. Nico and Gavin never lost their determination and grit to fight back in the (consolation final).
