A potentially dangerous situation ended peacefully after a woman doused herself in lighter fluid and threatened to hurt herself Thursday night at the Freedom Valu Center.
According to Austin Police Chief David McKichan, police responded to a call at 11:15 p.m. on Thursday of someone wanting to harm herself at the Freedom Valu Center. Police encountered a woman who had doused herself in lighter fluid, some of which got on the floor. The woman was holding another bottle of lighter fluid and a lighter and allegedly asked police to shoot her before pouring additional lighter fluid on the floor.
Police spoke to her to keep her calm and Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service was called to the scene, McKichan said. Police were able to restrain the woman without her activating the lighter. She was then placed on a health and welfare hold.
“We will not be seeking criminal charges against this individual,” McKichan said. “We just encourage those in this situation to reach out and get help before it comes to that point where you want to hurt yourself.”
