According to the court complaint, an officer responded to a stolen vehicle call on Aug. 16, 2018, in the 700 block of Sixth Avenue Northwest. The officer met with a woman who reported that Cantu had stolen her 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt.

She said she agreed to let Cantu drive her vehicle. When they arrived at the Sixth Avenue Northwest residence, she exited the vehicle, at which point Cantu locked the doors and drove away. She tried to call him several times, but his phone was shut off.

While she was speaking with the officer, Cantu texted her and apologized, saying he was bringing the car back. She tried calling him again, but he didn’t answer.

Dispatch later advised that Cantu had been arrested in Worth County, Iowa, driving the stolen vehicle.

Cantu was arrested on Tuesday on charges of driving after revocation of his license and fleeing an officer-not in a motor vehicle, both misdemeanors.

A review of Cantu’s criminal record shows a prior conviction for third-degree assault-substantial bodily harm. He has a warrant in Olmsted County for failure to appear at a hearing on charges of importing a controlled substance across state border (conspiracy to commit) and first-degree sale of 10 grams or more of cocaine/heroin/meth within a 90-day period (conspiracy to commit), both felonies.

Cantu will make his first court appearance today.
