The Austin Park and Recreation Department announced on Tuesday afternoon that the Dog Park would be closed until further notice due to the possible presence of canine parvovirus (CPV).

Park and Recreation Director Kim Underwood said Austin Police notified her after a dog owner called them to report her dog, who had previously been at the park, had been diagnosed with CPV at a recent veterinarian visit.

CPV is a highly contagious viral illness that can spread to other dog’s via dog feces. The virus can affect the intestines, causing vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss and lack of appetite, but can also attack the heart muscles in puppies, which can result in death.

CPV can spread when dog owners fail to clean up their dogs’ feces, which is required at the Austin Dog Park.

Underwood said efforts to organize a cleanup are underway, though a reopening date is unknown because the virus could potentially get into the soil.
