With the weather warming up, the Austin Police Department is reminding people to lock their vehicle doors as thefts from cars increase at this time of year.

“As temperatures warm, a lot more foot traffic occurs,” said Austin Police Chief David McKichan. “People will pull on the doors of vehicles checking to see if they’re unlocked. We advise people to keep their car doors locked and not to leave valuables inside the vehicle in plain sight.”

Police are also warning that bike thefts increase at this time of year.

“At this time of year, it is not uncommon for us to receive a stolen bike report on a daily basis,” McKichan said. “It is best to secure your bike with a lock; just because there are people around in public does not mean your property is protected.”
