Two individuals from Austin were sentenced on Thursday in Mower County District Court on drug convictions.

Chanh Daeng Inboua, 41, of Austin was sentenced to 65 months in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud for felony first-degree drugs-sale of 17 grams or more of methamphetamine within a 90-day period. He received credit for 98 days served.

Karla Monika Gilbertson, also known as Karla Zenaida Garcia, 39, of Austin was sentenced to 20 years of probation for felony third-degree drugs-sale of a narcotic. The charge was reduced from felony first-degree possession of 50 grams or more of methamphetamine as part of a plea agreement reached on Nov. 8.

Judge Jeffrey Kritzer issued the sentences.

Court documents state that narcotics detectives met with a confidential reliable informant (CRI) on Nov. 7, 2017, about purchasing methamphetamine from Inboua. The CRI and his vehicle were searched and he was given buy money and an audio transmitter. He was then monitored as he met Inboua in Austin. They had a conversation about drugs, then Inboua sold him 4.635 grams of methamphetamine, which the CRI surrendered to the police.

Later in the day, the detectives spoke with the CRI again about purchasing more methamphetamine from Inboua. The CRI said Inboua could sell him half an ounce of methamphetamine and arranged to make a purchase. The CRI and his vehicle were searched again and he was provided with more buy money and an audio transmitter. The CRI was then monitored as he met with Inboua again, though Inboua said he did not have the full half-ounce. Inboua sold him 10.271 grams of methamphetamine, which was surrendered to the police.

The detectives met with the CRI again on Nov. 17, 2017 about purchasing more methamphetamine from Inboua. The same procedures were carried out and the CRI surrendered 3.534 grams of methamphetamine after purchasing it from Inboua.

Austin police received a search warrant on March 21, 2018, to search a house in the 800 block of Third Avenue Northwest, where Gilbertson and Inboua resided. After the warrant was signed, a narcotics officer spotted Gilbertson in the lobby area of the Mower County Jail. He served her a copy of the warrant and placed her under arrest for previous drug sales. She agreed to speak to him and said there were more than two ounces of methamphetamine at the residence.

Police found approximately 68.12 grams of methamphetamine at the residence along with two .22 caliber rifles, miscellaneous drug paraphernalia, four surveillance cameras and evidence of manufacturing forged checks.

Inboua attempted to flee on a bicycle and was caught by police in the 400 block of Seventh Street Northwest.

Detectives spoke to Gilbertson, who claimed that “a couple of grams of meth” in her bedroom belonged to her and that she sold drugs to support her habit.

Charges of felony first-degree possession of 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and felony violent felon in possession of a firearm were dismissed against Inboua on Thursday. A charge of gross misdemeanor user of a controlled substance in possession of a firearm was dismissed against Gilbertson.

A review of Inboua’s criminal history shows a prior conviction for drug possession.

In addition to probation, Gilbertson must also perform 40 hours of community service, follow 22 conditions and pay $135 in fees. Failure to follow the conditions could result in 21 months in prison.
