Mina “Mitzi” Hagelund Plath, 98

Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother Mina “Mitzi” Hagelund Plath, 98, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, at Our House Memory Care in Austin.

Mina Hazel was born March 2, 1920, to Henry and Martha (Lee) Hovland. She grew up on a farm in Frost, Minnesota, and went to high school in Albert Lea, Minnesota, graduating in 1938. She met Jonas Hagelund from Austin at a dance and they married in 1939, settling in Austin to raise five children. After Jonas died in 1975, she learned to drive and worked part-time as a cook at the Gerard School. Following the death of her second husband, Edwin Plath, she and her eldest son, Jim, shared a house in Austin until Jim’s death in 2017.

All her long life, Mitzi loved to listen to music, dance, laugh, cook, play cards, watch the Twins and Vikings, and talk with her family members scattered across the country. A devoted member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, her faith and her dear friends at the church brought her much comfort as she aged to two months shy of her 99th birthday.
