Dennis Craig Smith, 62, was sentenced on Thursday in Mower County District Court to 18 months in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud for felony check forgery. He received credit for 224 days served.

Judge Christa M. Daily issued the sentence.

Court documents state that police responded to a call on Nov. 16, 2017, to Bobee Jo’s regarding a forged check. Management reported that a bartender had cashed a check for Smith in the amount of $480. The check was from a US Bank account of “Davis Farms,” but management was later notified that the check had been altered. Police were presented with a photograph of Smith.

A detective was able to confirm the driver’s license on the check matched that of Smith. The detective was familiar with Smith, who had cashed bad checks at Bobee Jo’s in the past.

Surveillance footage obtained from Bobee Jo’s showed Smith cashing the check. The detective then spoke to the service manager at US Bank, who said the routing number on the check did not correspond to US Bank and the account number on the check was not an actual account number.

A review of Smith’s criminal history shows prior convictions for check forgery, stolen checks, drug possession and motor vehicle theft. The sentence is concurrent to a 21-month sentence he is currently serving for a fifth-degree drug possession conviction out of Winona.

In addition to the sentence, Smith must also pay $574 in fees and restitution
