Hit the web for information

Last week I mentioned some of the well-known websites that people could go to seek information for events happening in Austin.

By far, I did not even touch the tip of the iceberg.  Here a few more.

Maybe you like history. Try the Mower County Historical Society at www.mowercountyhistory.org, the Hormel Historic Home at www.hormelhistorichome.org and the Spam Museum at www.spam.com .

Check out Community Education on the public-school website at www.austin.k12.mn.us. The Mower County Senior Center has events and classes that may surprise you.  Check them out at www.mcs.inc.org.

Get out and move

Did you know that any form of exercise can be a stress reliever?  So, get up and move your DNA. Check out a YMCA membership, which can be fun for the whole family.  If that isn’t for you, take a walk on the city or Jay C. Hormel Nature Center trails.

Of course, the Austin Public School”s Packer Dome offers walking during these winter months out of the elements. Visit www.facebook.com/WescottSportsComplex.   All that physical activity will help boost your feel-good endorphins and put a smile on your face, those are contagious!

Paint the Town Pink

Paint the Town Pink goes on with this year”s campaign, “Every Dollar, Every Cancer, Every Person Matters.”

Plunging for Pink is at 12:30 p.m. today at East Side Lake.

Some of the other upcoming larger community events are: Paint the Air Pink on Feb. 1 with the KAUS Radiothon; Paint the Rink Pink is at 7:05 p.m. on Feb. 2 at Riverside Arena; Fishing for a Cure is at noon on Feb. 9 at East Side Lake and Smashin” for Cancer Demo Derby and YMCA 5k is on Feb. 10 at the Mower County Fairgrounds.

There are many other events that you may enjoy.  To find which events interest you, go to the Hormel Institute site at www.hi.umn.edu and Click for Pink at the top of the page.  This will take you to a calendar of events.  Thank you to all that support this campaign.

Jobs

Our mild January we were experiencing was squashed this last week with this winter blast.

However, I still look at it as we were spoiled with a few mild weeks and spring is that much closer.

It is never too early to apply for that summer job so pick up your application or print the seasonal application off our website.

Park and Recreation has many part-time job opportunities for ages high school and up. Are you retired and looking for something to get you outside? We may have something for you.

We will have job openings in park maintenance, municipal pool positions, gardener position and recreation positions. Within the recreation position we will be hiring a summer recreation assistant position. Always check our city web page at ci.austin.mn.us for the employment information.

Packer Arena

Packer Arena public skate dates: Sorry, the next two weekends there are tournaments.

Watch for times for Feb. 8-10.  These are also posted on our Facebook page.  Having a birthday party or getting your friends and family together — rent the arena. Call our office for times at 507-433-1881.

Riverside Arena

Riverside Arena game schedule: The Austin Bruins next home game is Feb. 2 for Paint the Rink Pink. Get your tickets early.
