HAYFIELD — The Hayfield boys basketball team received a boost from its entire starting five as it racked up its eighth straight win, topping Zumbrota-Mazeppa (7-3 overall) 70-58 to win its Holiday Tournament Friday.
All five starters for Hayfield (9-1 overall) scored at least eight points and Patrick Towey gave the Vikings a big boost as he scored 21 of his 23 points in the first half — including a 17-point outburst in the game’s first eight minutes.

Hayfield’s top scorer Mason Tapp was scoreless in the first half, but he finished with 11 points.
“We felt pretty fortunate. That was big for Patrick to do that in the first half,” Hayfield head coach Chris Pack said. “They were playing a zone and you have to shoot them out of it and that’s pretty much what he did. I thought he just played a well rounded half.”
Eight of Hayfield’s nine wins on the season have come by at least 10 points and the Vikings have broken the 70-point barrier seven times this season.
“They all get along, they’re making extra passes and the get the best shot available, not the first shot available,” Pack said. “I really, truly believe they don’t care who scores and it shows. Our team defense and rebounding has been really solid as well.”

Hayfield currently has a QRF ranking of No. 10, but it will have a much better idea of where it stands in Section 1A after it plays at Rushford-Peterson (5-3 overall) on Jan. 3.
“They’re kind of the standard in Section 1A and we’re going to see if we’re on their level,” Pack said.
