According to the dictionary, the definition of volunteer is “a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task.” When looking for a clear cut example of how important volunteers are to the city of Austin, you can look no further than the Auxiliary at Mayo Clinic Health System.

“Volunteering comes from your heart, said Pam Terry, Auxiliary president. “I wanted to give back to the medical center that was so good to me as an employee.”

In 2017, volunteers provided 5,811 hours of service at the medical center valued at over $120,000.

“In addition to volunteer hours we give back to the medical center with a monetary donation through fundraising efforts,” Terry said. “We have a direct impact on patient care with our annual donation. Our efforts have given us the opportunity to fund the purchase of a hydraulic stretcher in the Emergency Department, telescope for urology procedures, bariatric table and chair, upgraded weight scales, surgical scope for Ear, Nose and Throat and beanie babies for pediatric patients.”

DedaRae Graber, Auxiliary vice president, said if you want to make an impact in the health of the community, volunteer.

“Just like volunteers, together, we can make a difference in the lives of many patients,” Graber said. “Every day that I volunteer my goal is to make the people I meet feel more positive and relaxed, hopefully encourage a smile.”

“Our service to patients and their families has expanded; providing caring hand massages to patients and families, helping patients register for appointments, knitting stocking caps for babies, organizing and distributing magazines to the waiting areas, and helping with vaccine clinics and other hosting opportunities,” Terry said.

Terry also said she would love to see new members.

“Everyone is always welcome. We would like you to join us for a Meet and Greet Reception on Tuesday, Dec. 18 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the piano waiting room, near the Lab on the main level at Mayo Clinic Health System, 1000 First Drive N.W., Austin.”

This event is free and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Auxiliary volunteers and committee members will be available to answer questions and tell you more about the work that is done.
