Lyle-Pacelli boys can’t hang on in OT loss to FBA

HAYFIELD — The Lyle-Pacelli basketball team has had a rough winter break, and things got even more difficult for the Athletics as they saw a second double-digit lead disappear in a 54-50 overtime loss to Faribault Bethlehem Academy in the third place game of the Hayfield Holiday Tournament Friday.

FBA (4-4 overall) took the lead for good when Griffin Malecha connected on a deep three-pointer from the wing to put his team up 52-50 with 35 seconds left in overtime. LP had a chance to tie or take the lead, but it turned the ball over the ensuing possession.

“We didn’t do the things we were supposed to do,” LP head coach Scott Koenigs said. “We left a shooter open on the game winning shot when we told them not to double team (inside). It’s frustrating because it’s happening a lot in games right now.”

LP (3-5 overall) led 40-30 after Cole Walter scored on a lay-up, but the Cardinals put together a 10-1 burst to get within 41-40 with five minutes left in the game. Jed Nelson, who had 19 points and five rebounds, had a pair of paint scores to put LP up 47-46 with 2:31 left and 49-48 with 1:25 seconds left. FBA tied the game when Malecha hit a free throw with 39 seconds left and Walter, who had six points, five assists and five steals, missed a driving lay-up as time expired in regulation.

LP had won its last two games before the Hayfield Tournament, but it now has back-to-back losses as it looks to get back on track when it hosts Medford next Thursday.

“This is our second overtime loss where we should’ve won and we let it slip,” Koenigs said. “It should have been a win and instead, it’s a loss. It’s tough to accept and it’s happening too much.”
