Smoking ballast forces evacuation of senior living facility; No injuries reported

The residents of Our House Senior Living apartments in Austin were temporarily evacuated after a report of smoke in the building on Sunday morning.

According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, police and Austin firefighters responded to Our House Senior Living after being alerted of smoke at 7:57 a.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, they saw staff members escorting residents out of the building. Officers assisted staff and were able to get all residents out.

Krueger said officers could smell and see smoke in the hallways. Austin firefighters located a smoking electrical ballast in one of the rooms.

Residents were allowed back into the building by 9:49 a.m. and firefighters cleared the scene by 10:09 a.m.

An electrical company was contacted to investigate what caused the ballast to smoke.
