Two combines were damaged in fires over the past few days in Mower County.
According to Mower County Chief Deputy Mark May, the first fire occurred at 4:18 p.m. on Thursday at 120th Street and 720th Avenue. A John Deere 9660 was combining beans when it caught fire. A deputy at the scene spoke to the combine’s owner, Dennis Winfield, who said the driver had put out the fire with fire extinguishers.
The LeRoy Fire Department also responded to the scene. It is unknown what caused the fire, though firefighters said it was likely electrical in nature.
The second fire occurred at 10 a.m. on Saturday at 305th Street and Highway 63 in Racine. A 2003 New Holland CR940 was combining corn when it caught fire because the stalks were getting hot and combusting, according to May. The combine’s owner, Kevin Vrieze, attempted to put out the fire, but ran out of fire extinguishers.
The Stewartville Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.
No injuries were reported in either fire.
