A porch fire that broke out at a northeast Austin home on Friday night left one man injured.
Firefighters and police responded to a porch fire at 11:45 p.m. on Oct. 5 at the 2000 block of Sixth Avenue Northeast. According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, a 72-year-old man was asleep on a recliner during the incident.
Another 46-year-old man, who was identified as the victim’s son, was asleep in the basement when he was awakened by the sounds of smoke detectors going off and raced upstairs to the porch.
Krueger said the son saw the fire and then woke up his father. The son then grabbed a garden hose near the porch to extinguish the flames.
The victim had attempted to rescue his golf clubs that were engulfed in the fire, and burned one of his hands in the process, Krueger said.
The Austin Police Department and the Austin Fire Department responded to the fire, and made sure the flames were completely put out when they arrived on scene. Gold Cross Ambulance also treated the victim’s hand onsite and did not transport him for treatment.
The names of the two men were not released.
Officers cleared the scene at 12:12 a.m. and the firefighters left at 1:16 a.m.
Krueger said the cause of the fire has not been determined and there were no damage estimates available on Monday morning.
