‘Welcoming Week’ begins Friday

Austin will celebrate its third annual “Welcoming Week” beginning Friday, Sept. 14, and ending Sunday, Sept. 23.

The goal of the celebration is to bring together residents in a spirit of unity to raise awareness of the benefits of welcoming everyone. During this annual series of events, communities bring together new and long-time residents in a spirit of unity to raise awareness of the benefits of welcoming everyone – including new Americans.

Austin was one of the first cities in Minnesota to join the Welcoming America coalition of cities, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that is leading a movement of inclusive communities becoming more prosperous by making everyone who lives there feel like they belong. Austin is becoming a nationally recognized leader in building an inclusive community that all residents can thrive in.

“Austin is excited to celebrate another Welcoming Week”, said City Administrator Craig Clark. “We are a stronger and better community when all residents feel welcome here.”

“This celebration builds on the great work that’s been happening to create a more just and inclusive community”, said Austin Human Rights Commission Chairman Jason Baskin. “The Strategic Welcoming Plan that was released earlier this year made it clear that Austin has a lot going for it and that diversity brings a vibrancy and growth to our community that is vital to our future success.”
