Hunger for improvement: Trey Hungerholt is hoping to lead the Cards to new levels this fall

LEROY — If it can happen on a nine-man football field, LeRoy-Ostrander senior Trey Hungerholt has probably seen it.

Trey, who is the son of LO head football coach Aaron Hungerholt, has been on the Cardinals’ sidelines since he was a third grader. He’s served as team manager, he’s worked on film and he’s even helped with equipment. For the last few years Trey’s role has been expanded drastically as he’s served as LO’s quarterback on offense and safety on defense.

It’s a role that demands a lot of athleticism, focus and awareness as Trey serves as a dual-threat quarterback. He threw for 1,311 yards and 11 TDs and ran for 873 yards and 10 TDs last season. He also had picked off five passes on defense.

We’re probably asking more out of Trey then most people would ask out of a high school quarterback,” Aaron said. “He’s going to carry our team offensively and defensively. He’s making the calls and he knows where the guys go. It’s not all about him, but he’s kind orchestrating everything to make the right reads and the right calls.”

After not fielding a varsity team in 2015, the Cards went 2-7 overall in 2016 and they went 4-5 overall last year, which was their best record in a decade. This season, LO is hoping to have an even better run as it looks to make some noise and keep opponents guessing with Trey’s versatility in the backfield.

The Cardinals are also bringing back running back Carter Johnson, who missed much of last season with an knee injury, and they junior Riley Olson will give the Cardinals a bruising presence on both sides of the ball.

We have a lot of team chemistry and team speed,” Trey said. “I’ve got to move everyone around, make sure they know their assignments and make sure everyone’s on the same page.”

Olson said the team relies on their signal-caller to keep the Cards in stride.

“We look at Trey a lot. He gets us all ready to go for all of our plays, he gets all of our sets in and he makes sure everyone knows what they’re doing,” Olson said. “He does a good job of leading the team.”

Since Trey is focusing on playing college basketball, this will likely be his last season as a football player and he’s not taking it lightly.

We just want to go out there and win games. This year means a lot. I’m definitely going to miss football a lot [when it’s done],” Trey said. “

The Cardinals will open their season against Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons in LeRoy at 7 p.m. on Aug. 24. LO will have a bye week on Aug. 31 and it will resume play on Sept. 7.
