Recent traffic deaths and injury numbers released by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety are on a steady trend to meet last year’s count during the 100 deadliest days (Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day).
During the first 52 days of this period, preliminary numbers released Wednesday showed that 66 people have lost their lives, accounting for 37 percent of traffic fatalities so far this year. That’s down just one from the 67 reported last year over those 52 days.
Of those deaths, at least five were distracted-driving related, 19 were speed-releated and 13 were alcohol-related.
Also related to those numbers, seven were known to not be wearing seat belts and 24 of these accidents were on motorcycles.
