The Mower County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Wednesday that a 6-year-old Freeborn County boy drowned last weekend during a family gathering in rural Mower County.

First responders were called between 9-9:30 p.m. on Saturday to a Lyle Township residence. The boy had drowned after falling into an unused outdoor swimming pool on the property, according to Mower County Senior Sgt. Investigator Steve Sandvik.

The Mower County Sheriff’s Office, Austin Police Department, Gold Cross Ambulance Service, Lyle Fire and First Responders and Mayo One responded to the scene. Sandvik said that every life saving effort was made.

Sandvik did not release the boy’s name; however, he did say the death appears to have been an accident.

The case is still open pending autopsy results.
