Authors lining up for festival

Ten authors will take the stage at Sweet Reads to celebrate the literary arts during the Austin ArtWorks Festival on Aug. 25-26.

John Beckmann: John Beckmann is a trial lawyer and a partner in the firm Hoversten, Johnson, Beckmann & Hovey. He is the author of short stories, essays and reviews. He has published two works of fiction — “38,” about the Dakota Conflict, and “Dogs.” Beckmann’s grandfather was a Lutheran pastor and his next book, “Lutheran Stories,” arises from that history.

Sherrie Hansen: After 12 years of writing romance novels, Austin area native Sherrie met and married her real-life hero, Mark Decker, a pastor. They divide their time between two different houses, 85 miles apart, and Sherrie writes on the run whenever she has a spare minute. Sherrie has 11 books in print and her new release, “Daybreak” is the long-awaited sequel to her first novel, “Night and Day.”

Randy Hilmer: Randy was born and raised in Austin, Minnesota. Randy worked for Geo. A. Hormel  & Co. and helped open the Beloit, Wisconsin facility. Randy has published four murder mystery books:  “Murder Amongst Friends,” “BFF Spells Murder,” “Murder is an Education” and “Murder Before Pleasure.” He has also written two children’s books, “Sporty, the Car With a Heart” and “Sporty’s First Car Show.” His son, Ryan Hilmer, also from the Austin area, did the illustrations.

Katie Hunerdosse: Katie Hunerdosse illustrated children’s book “The Monster Dog — A Small Dog with a Big Attitude” by Carmen Tribbett. Katie graduated from Luther College in 2008 with a degree in art. She lives in Austin, Minnesota with her husband, two monster dogs of her own and her toddler son. Occasionally she squeezes in artistic endeavors.

Lyle Lieder: The Rev. Dr. Lyle W. Lieder is the author of “My Life Behind The Wheel,” his memoir of collecting over 190 classic cars. Lieder acquired an impressive array of special cars and was instrumental in the founding of several antique and classic car clubs.

Jane Lichty Pearson: Jane Lichty Pearson is a repurposed kindergarten teacher living in Durango, Colorado. She never sees a can of Spam without thinking about Austin, Minnesota. “Camp Bulletins from 1110” is her first book of creative nonfiction. She is currently working on her second book, “Hanging Baskets.”

Karl Schaper: Karl Schaper of Nora Springs, Iowa was born in Germany in 1931 and was a teenager during World War II. His novels, “Three Towers of Home: Into the Unknown” and “Three Towers of Home: The Quest for Home,” are inspired by his real-life interactions with border guards. After the war, he immigrated to the U.S., he met and married an Iowa girl and became a United States citizen.

Bill Taufic: Bill Taufic grew up in Austin and discovered photography through newspaper and yearbook at Pacelli High School. Taufic made his life as a professional photographer, specializing in portraits in New York. Recently visiting Austin, Taufic became interested in Austin’s growing diversity which inspired a book-in-progress, “Our Austin,” to celebrate Austin’s intentional work in progress to build a more inclusive community.

Carmen Tribbitt: Carmen Tribbett is the author of children’s book “The Monster Dog — A Small Dog with a Big Attitude.” She is working on a second Monster Dog book which will introduce children to Alzheimer’s disease. Tribbett worked as a sixth-grade teacher, RN and nursing skills instructor. She lives in Austin, with the “Monster Dog.”

John Weiss: After writing for the Rochester Post-Bulletin for nearly 41 years, John Weiss published a collection of columns called “Back Roads, the Best of the Best.” In addition to working as a reporter and photographer, Weiss wrote the Back Roads column; about small towns, rural people and everyday events.
