Freshman pitchers step up in a sweep for Lyle-Pacelli

The Lyle-Pacelli baseball team relied on a couple of freshman hurlers as it swept Glenville-Emmons-Alden-Conger (0-4 overall) by scores of 17-0 in five innings and 10-0 in five innings in Marcusen Park Friday.

Jed Nelson threw his first career varsity no-hitter in the first game as he struck out nine and Cole Walter picked up a win in his first career varsity mound start in the nightcap.

Nelson walked four and hit one, but he was able to avoid giving up a hit, even though his teammates made him aware of the fact that he as closing in the accomplishment.

My fast ball was working and I was throwing it for strikes,” Nelson said. “Taylor [Arett] mentioned that it was a no-hitter, but it didn’t bother me.”

GEAC had the bases loaded in the second and the third innings, but Walter was able to pitch out of trouble to keep the shutout intact.

I just didn’t want to let my team down. I wanted to throw strikes and make it a quick one,” Walter said. “We just try to keep getting better every day and make sure we’re not screwing around in practice. I think we can make it pretty far [this year]. This is a good group.”

After a long wait of practicing in the gym, the Athletics (5-0 overall, 5-0 SEC) have come out on a roll, outscoring their first five opponents by a total mark of 61-1. LP will look to keep it going when it plays a doubleheader at Spring Grove Tuesday.

LP head coach Brock Meyer was glad his team was able to pick up to clean wins on Friday.

It was good to get two games in when it’s nice out like this,” Meyer said. “We’ve got to take advantage of days like today. Both pitchers have been around baseball so long and they know what they’re doing. They attack hitters and that was huge for us to save some arms for Tuesday against Spring Grove.”
