Fire safety tips this weekend

With Memorial Day weekend marking the kickoff of the summer season in Minnesota, the Austin Fire Department is urging residents to keep fire safety and prevention in mind.
Some important tips to remember when using the grill are:
• Only use a grill outside and be sure to keep it at least three feet from any siding, deck rails or eaves. Keep kids and pets out of this three-foot area;
• Be sure to keep your grill clean. Remove the grease and clean it after each use to reduce the chances of starting a fire;
• If using a gas grill, open the lid before lighting;
• If using a charcoal grill, once the ashes have cooled, place them in a metal container and keep them away from the house or deck; and
• Keep an eye on your grill and do not walk away from it once it is lit.
Fire safety tips are almost the same for indoor cooking as they are for outdoor cooking. Cooking is the leading cause of fires across the nation, accounting for 45 percent of all structural fires in Minnesota in 2016. The top three factors of these fires were unattended equipment, having combustibles too close and equipment that was accidentally turned on or not turned off after use.
