Austin teen injured in car accident

A 17-year-old Austin teen was transported to Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus-Rochester after suffering life-threatening injuries from a car crash Monday afternoon.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol accident report, law enforcement responded at 4:11 p.m. on Monday to Highway 218 at 270th Street (County Road 2) in Lansing Township. A 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier traveling westbound on CR 2 and a 2017 Chevrolet Pickup traveling southbound on 218 had collided.

The Mower County Sheriff’s Office, Austin Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.

The driver of the Cavalier, Jazmin Claudia Portillo, 18, of Austin was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin with non-life threatening injuries. The passenger, Megan Marie Erie, 17, of Austin was taken to Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus-Rochester with life-threatening injuries. No condition report was available.

The driver of the pickup, Burton Jay Iverson, 79, of Austin was not injured.

Both vehicles were driving on wet roads. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
