Despite a major setback in the fall, Austin senior Sydney Marsh is back in action for the Packer track and field team and she was competing in her favorite event as Austin won its home triangular against Albert Lea and Rochester John Marshall at Larry Gilbertson Track and Field Tuesday.

Marsh tore her ACL and part of her meniscus during soccer season, but she’s made a relatively quick recovery.

“It’s been a really long seven months,” Marsh said. “A lot of people said that it would be really iffy [for me to compete in track] and I’d have to work as hard as I possibly could. I took so many hours at the gym and at the home working. I started from the very bottom. That first week I couldn’t even lift up my leg.”

Marsh won the pole vault, an event she’s qualified for state twice in, on Tuesday with a height of nine-feet and she feels she can add to that height with a little more practice and meet experience. So far, she hasn’t had much practice as the Packers were snowed in for most of the first month of the season.

“It’s getting there finally. I’m starting to be able to vault again,” Marsh said. “I think I can back to where I was after I practice and I start to figure it out. Once it starts to feel normal again, I’ll definitely be able to go a lot higher.”

Abby Lewis won the 1600-meter run and the 3200-meter run for Austin and Taige Iverson won the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles.
