According to the court complaint, an officer on patrol initiated a traffic stop at 1:11 a.m. on Saturday on South Main Street after clocking a vehicle driving 40 in a 30 mile per hour zone. The officer detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car and advised the driver why he had been pulled over. The driver said he was giving Calhoun, who was in the car, a ride home. When asked about the marijuana odor, the driver said he had just smoked some.

The officer asked if there were any drugs in the car and the driver and Calhoun said no, according to the report. The officer called the K9 unit, which arrived shortly. While the K9 officer was searching the driver, Calhoun tried to exit the vehicle and was told to stay seated. No drugs were found on the driver.

When the K9 officer tried to search Calhoun, he became noncompliant and tried to fight, according to the complaint. The other officer stepped in to assist. Calhoun was sprayed with a chemical agent, but allegedly continued to fight. An officer then used a Taser, which caused Calhoun to fall to the ground, but he allegedly continued to resist, even when the officer tried to “drive stun” him to gain compliance. Calhoun allegedly stopped resisting when the K9 officer said he would release the dog on him.

Approximately 82 grams of marijuana and 0.96 grams of cocaine were found on Calhoun’s person, according to the complaint.

A review of Calhoun’s criminal record shows prior convictions for assault, including a guilty plea to gross misdemeanor domestic assault on Friday in Mower County District Court.

Calhoun will appear in court again on May 3.
