According to Austin Fire Chief Jim McCoy, the residents, two women and a man, were upstairs when the fire started.
Two people got out of the second story window onto the roof. A neighbor, with assistance from Austin police, was able to get them down with a six-foot ladder.
The state fire marshal was called to the scene. As of 1:30 p.m., the cause of the fire was unknown. The house, however, is a total loss, according to McCoy.
According to the Mower County Assessor, Prestholt Properties, Inc. of Manly, Iowa, owns the property.
