Man facing possible drug charges, among others, after traffic stop

A man arrested after a traffic stop on Thursday is in Mower County Jail facing several possible charges.

According to Austin Police Capt. Dave McKichan, an officer stopped Benito Silva Martinez, 32, of Austin at 8 p.m. on Thursday in the 100 block of Seventh Street Southwest because is vehicle had an expired tag. Martinez allegedly gave the officer a false name, but when the officer called it in, another officer that had stopped Martinez earlier in the week said Martinez had given him a different name.
Martinez did not have a driver’s license or proof of insurance, according to McKichan.
The officer searched Martinez’s vehicle and allegedly found approximately 14 grams of methamphetamine, a small amount of marijuana, a fake ID and several checks that matched the name on the fake ID.
Martinez is facing possible charges of felony third-degree drug possession, misdemeanor driving without a valid license, misdemeanor giving a peace officer a false name, and misdemeanor operating a motor vehicle with an expired registration.
