Eberhart finalists named for 2018; Poetry night to be held on April 10

Finalists have been named in the Eberhart Poetry Contest, sponsored by Austin Public Schools.

The contest, named to honor Austin native and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Richard Eberhart, is an annual competition open to students in grades kindergarten-12.

All finalists, their families, and the community are invited to attend the Eberhart Night of Poetry event at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10 at the Hormel Historic Home.

The finalists from each school are invited to read their poem during the event. Finalists are asked to invite an adult or teacher who has inspired them to be a poet and share a few comments about the them.

School winners will be announced after all poems are shared. Certificates and awards will be presented at that time.

The Austin High School Language Arts Department will judge all entries.

The finalists:

Woodson Kindergarten Center — Madelynn Corey and Rachel Napton.

Banfield Elementary School (grades 1-4) —  Mercy Ademola , fourth grade; and Charlotte Bliese and Juliette Zimmerli, both second grade.

Neveln Elementary School (grades 1-4) — Izaak Belden, fourth grade; Rio Grimm, second grade; Aleah Nguyen, first.

Southgate Elementary School (grades 1-4) — Henry Andersen and Paisley Tietje, both fourth grade; Jaely Solberg, third grade.

Sumner Elementary School (grades 1-4)  — Johanna Simpson, Damaris Vega Andrade, and Enar Zaki, all third grade.

I. J. Holton Intermediate School (grades 5-6) — Claire Bliese, Ariana Keefe and Max Larson, all sixth grade.

Ellis Middle School (grades 7-8) — Cora Feist, Kiera Neufeldt and Nora Tweeten, all seventh grade.

Austin High School (grades 9-12) — Eleanor Hinchcliffe and Cassity Nangle, both 11th grade; and Keagan Larson, ninth grade.
