Landowners can place orders for a large variety of trees – bareroot and container grown – through March as part of Mower Soil & Water Conservation District’s annual program aimed at conservation.

Bareroot trees are being sold in bundles of 25 and offered in three types of species: evergreens, deciduous and shrubs. The tree program no longer offers single orders for bareroots. Evergreens also are offered in container-grown options, including 1- and 2-gallon pots for Techny Arborvitae, Black Hills Spruce and Meyer Spruce (2-gallon only).

Mower SWCD also is selling tree mats with staples and tree shelters with stakes.

Only limited quantities, however, will be available after Feb. 28; order cancellations will not be accepted after that date.

“We strongly encourage anyone interested in ordering trees to get it done this month before the early deadline,” said James Fett, Mower SWCD’s watershed technician who coordinates the tree program. “Orders are done on a first-come, first-serve basis.”

This year, the program has added butternut (also known as white walnut) to its extensive list of bareroot trees.

Orders must be placed and fully paid by April 1 with Mower SWCD, which then will distribute trees in mid-April (date to be determined) on the west side of the Runnings store in northwest Austin. Letters with pickup dates and times will be sent in early April to everyone who placed orders.
