Pair of concerts scheduled in Austin this weekend

The Historic Paramount Theatre will host two concerts this weekend. Minneapolis-based Americana-folk band Rogue Valley will take the stage Saturday. The The MacPhail Spotlight Revue will present  “Flirting with Sondheim” on Sunday.

Rogue Valley’s performance will be the culmination of a week spent in Austin, which began with a songwriting workshop at the Austin Public Library.

“They’ve received support from the Minnesota State Arts Board to do a tour with school residencies,” said Austin Area Commission for the Arts Director Laura Helle.

Members of Rogue Valley worked with student at Riverland Community College, Austin High School, Ellis Middle School and the MacPhail Center for Music-Austin, according to Helle.

Ensembles from those schools will play a song with the band during Saturday’s performance.

The performance is 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door for adults and $10 in advance of $15 at the door for students.

The MacPhail Spotlight Revue will follow up on Sunday at the Paramount by presenting scenes and songs written by musical theatre legend Stephen Sondheim. Soprano Andrea Leap, mezzo Ivory Doublette, baritone Tom Speckhard and tenors Joey Clark and Dennis Peterson will be  perform In “Flirting with Sondheim.” They will be backed by musical ensemble Timothy De Prey on piano, Matt McIntyre on bass and Erik Schee on drums.

Works will be included from “West Side Story,” “Company,” “Into the Woods” and “Little Night Music.”

The performance will be from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday at the Paramount Theatre.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for seniors and youth. MacPhail students get in free with a ticket voucher that must be obtained through the Austin Student Services office.

Paint the Town Pink reaches final weekend

Paint the Town Pink may be winding down, but there are still opportunities to raise funds this weekend:

Sunday, Feb. 11

• Mower County Paint the Town Pink Masters Golf Challenge, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mower County Fairgrounds. This brand new event offers nine holes of golf in the snow. The fee is $20 for a four-person team, $10 for a two-person team and $4 for kids 15 and under. To register, call, 1-507-438-1021

• Rings, Rings, Rings, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Austin ArtWorks Center. Using Precious Metal Clay (clay composed of silver particles, water and an organic binder) students create the ring of their dreams. No hammering, sawing or soldering. The final rings are all 99.9 percent pure silver and called “fine silver.” Students who have previously taken the class may enjoy making sculptural rings. This takes ring design to the next level of difficulty and is an exciting option for the advanced student.
