Fire causes approximately $45,000 in damage to home

No injuries were reported in a Wednesday fire that caused approximately $45,000 in damage to the kitchen and dining room of a home in the 1200 block of Fourth Avenue Northeast.

According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, a woman was driving by the residence at 5:31 p.m. on Wednesday when she saw heavy smoke coming from the south side of the residence. Austin police and fire departments responded to the scene.

According to Austin Fire Chief Jim McCoy, the residents were moving from the house and had furniture stacked in the kitchen in order to clean carpets throughout the house. A box spring mattress, which was stacked on top of some chairs, fell over and ignited one of the stove burners, starting the fire.

Slobodana Pejic, who lives at the residence, said she left the house for only 15 minutes. Velimir Pejic, who also resides there, said the house was fine when he left at 2 p.m.

Austin firefighters stayed on the scene until 10:11 p.m. The state fire marshal was contacted about the incident.
