Jason Michael DePaul, 43, of Lyle pleaded guilty to felony failure to register as a predatory offender as part of a plea agreement on Monday in Mower County District Court.

The Minnesota Department of Correction issued an arrest warrant for DePaul in January 2017 after he did not comply with a drug screening. An officer checked his registered address in the 400 block of 10th Street Northeast, but did not find him. DePaul’s landlord told the officer that another tenant had said DePaul would “sneak” into his place to avoid the police.

Officers were dispatched on Feb. 3 to the residence of Takela Rogers in the 1800 block of East Oakland Avenue on a report of a baby having seizures. Drugs were found in the home and Rogers was arrested. She admitted to the police that DePaul was inside the residence and police found him hiding in the second floor attic. DePaul had hidden at Rogers’ home in the past.

Rogers said DePaul was staying with her because his landlord was in Hawaii and he was locked out of his apartment. She said was only supposed to stay with her for three days, but when he didn’t leave, she asked him if he had warrants, which he denied. She also said he slept in her children’s bedroom while her children slept in her room.

A review of DePaul’s criminal record shows several prior convictions for failing to register as a predatory offender in Mower and Olmsted counties.

In Minnesota, felony failure to register as a predatory offender carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

DePaul will be sentenced on May 3.
