Pacelli announces its spelling and geography bee winners

Top two spellers advance to regional competition Feb. 13

Pacelli Catholic School finalists in grades 4-8 participated in the Pacelli Spelling Bee on Jan. 12 and the Pacelli Geography Bee on Jan.19.

First-place spelling bee competitor, Neha Thawani Nanda, and second-place, Allison Srp, both advance to regionals in Rochester on Feb. 13.

Regional winners will advance to the Southeast Minnesota Final Spelling Bee on Tuesday, Feb. 27. It’s champion will win an expenses-paid trip (including one adult) to compete in the 2017-18 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC held at the end of May 2018.

Pacelli Catholic Schools spelling bee contestants pictured are, from left, front row: Lynsey McMahon (8th grade), Yong Achouth (5th), Daran Plunkett (5th), Grayson Bickler (4th) and Joey Schulte (4th); back row: Allison Srp (8th), Calvin Nuss (6th), Othello Stone (7th), Neha Thawani Nanda (7th), and Addison Olson (6th)

Geography bee first-place winner, Allison Srp, will now take a qualifying test, which will be submitted to the National Geographic Society.

The National Geographic Society will then invite up to 100 of the top-qualifying Minnesota participants to the Minnesota State Bee to be held on April 6.

The annual contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography, according to the bee’s website. Schools with students in grades four through eight are eligible for this entertaining and challenging test of geographic knowledge.
