Man pleads guilty to drug possession in school zone

Brandon Michael Zarate-Sanchez, 24, of Austin pleaded guilty to felony third-degree possession of methamphetamine in a school/park/public housing zone as part of a plea agreement on Monday in Mower County District Court. He initially pleaded not guilty on Nov. 20.

A charge of felony second-degree drug sale of methamphetamine in a school zone will be dropped at the sentencing.

A police informant purchased methamphetamine from another alleged drug dealer on May 1 while he was staying at Zarate-Sanchez’s residence in the 700 block of Seventh Street Northwest, which is near Sumner Elementary School.

In Minnesota, felony third-degree possession of methamphetamine in a school/park/public housing zone carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
