Apland

Jarvis Patrick Apland, 36, of Spring Valley, pleaded guilty to felony fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle and gross misdemeanor criminal vehicular operation-bodily harm under the influence of a controlled substance on Friday in Mower County District Court as part of a plea agreement. Two charges of gross misdemeanor criminal vehicular operation, two charges of misdemeanor DWI and a charge of misdemeanor speeding will be dropped at the sentencing as part of the agreement.

Apland was arrested on July 20 after fleeing a deputy who had recently arrested him for driving without insurance. The chase ended at the intersection of 795th Avenue and 200th Street, when Apland lost control of his vehicle and skidded about 100 feet into a field.

Apland’s passenger, an adult female, complained of pain in the lumbar area of her spine and said she could not take deep breaths without extreme pain. Grand Meadow Ambulance transported her to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

Apland told police he ran because he did not want “another set of tickets” or to “go back to jail.” Apland failed several field sobriety tests.

Felony fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle carries a maximum penalty of three years and one day in prison and a $5,000 fine. Apland will be sentenced on Feb. 1.
