Mathias “Mike” Merten, 84

Mathias “Mike” J. Merten, 84, of Adams, Minnesota, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017, at the Adams Health Care Center.

Mike was born Feb. 24, 1933, in Adams to Phillip and Leonilla (Mullenbach) Merten. In 1951, he graduated from Adams High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army. After his service, he attended The University of Wisconsin, LaCrosse, graduating in 1959. He married Susan Palubicki in 1963 at Winona, Minnesota.

He started the Merten Company in 1965 in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes in Raytown, Missouri, where he served on the parish council. He was heavily involved in Boy Scouts Troop 428 and the Raytown High School Band and athletic boosters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Susan, in 2012; his brother, Nathan; and his baby twin brother, Mike.

Mike is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David (Michelle) Merten, Grayslake, Illinois; two grandchildren, Alex Merten, Grayslake, and Kristina Merten, Grayslake; sisters and brother-in-law, Dorothy Loecher, West Bend, Wisconsin, and Sally (Damian) Bissen, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; brother and sisters-in-law, Bernard (Eline) Merten, St. Ansgar, Iowa, and Betty Merten, Brownsdale, Minnesota; nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams with Father Marreddy Pothireddy officiating. Visitation will be held at the church one hour before the service. Entombment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Kansas City. The Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
