Austin police and the State Fire Marshal are conducting an arson investigation over  a car fire on Tuesday night.

According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, officers responded to a car fire call at 10:10 p.m. on Tuesday in the 700 block of 11th Avenue Southwest. When police arrived, they saw flames coming out of the passenger side of a 2005 Buick Century that was legally parked on the street. They noted that the gas cap of the vehicle was open.

The Austin Fire Department arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire.

A witness told police he saw a white male, wearing jeans, a black leather jacket, and a white bandana covering his face, who appeared to be throwing things under the car. He then heard popping sounds, like fireworks, and saw the rear of the car was on fire. The man then walked in a northeastern direction and was picked up by a dark SUV.

Officers found four 20-gauge shotgun shells at the scene.

The Austin Fire Department contacted the State Fire Marshal, who determined the fire was “incendiary,” according to Austin Fire Chief Jim McCoy. Samples found at the scene have been sent to labs for further analysis.

The investigation is ongoing.
