Ashley Marie White, 29, of Austin was charged Monday in Mower County District Court with two felony counts of third-degree possession of methamphetamine in school and park zones.

According to the court complaint, Lyle Police Chief Tom Herrick was on school patrol on Sept. 15 and was speaking to the Lyle superintendent of schools when a woman approached and asked to speak to the superintendent inside. She seemed nervous.

Herrick waited outside until he saw the superintendent and the woman walking toward a car. Herrick ran the car’s plates and found that it was registered to Ashley Johnson, whose license status was “suspended.” Herrick spoke with the superintendent, who identified the woman as Johnson. Herrick then followed Johnson’s vehicle and issued her a citation.

When Herrick returned, the superintendent said Johnson’s passenger, White, was “acting strange.”

Herrick ran White’s name and discovered she had warrants out for her arrest.

Herrick located Johnson’s unoccupied vehicle parked at a playground, according to the complaint. He waited several minutes until White showed up and opened the passenger side door to remove a backpack. Herrick then ordered her to identify herself, which she did not. Herrick then arrested White on the warrants.

Mower County deputies arrived at the scene and searched White’s backpack, allegedly finding identification, several syringes, a scale and approximately one gram of methamphetamine.

In Minnesota, felony third-degree possession of methamphetamine in a school zone and felony third-degree possession of methamphetamine in a park zone both carry maximum penalties of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

White’s next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 21.
