Events scheduled to thank veterans; VFW Post 1216 to host ceremonies on Saturday

Veterans Day is this Saturday, and this weekend offers many opportunities for veterans to be thanked for their service.

On Friday, veterans and their families will be treated to a live performance by the Austin High School Pep Band at St. Mark’s Living, sponsored by Heartland Hospice. There will be a presentation by the American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216 Color Guard. Cake and refreshments will be served after the event. Veterans will get half off the price of a buffet at the Austin Pizza Ranch on Thursday and Friday. The buffet will be free for veterans on Saturday. Veterans may also get a free Magnificent Seven Breakfast from Perkins and a free meal and free beer from Applebee’s on Saturday. Veterans must present a valid military identification to receive free meals.

Sweet Reads will be hosting a special Veterans Day kids program on Saturday. The program will run from 10-11 a.m. For more information, call 507-396-8660.

VFW Post 1216 will be holding ceremonies on Saturday starting with a flag retirement ceremony at 3:30 p.m. That will be followed by a program honoring prisoners of war/missing in action at 4:30 p.m. Veterans will also be treated to a free dinner at 5 p.m. For more information, call 507-433-6039.

The Austin Bruins will be hosting Military Appreciation Day as they take on the Coulee Region Chill at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday at Riverside Arena. All active military and veterans will get free admission with valid military identification. For more information, call 507-434-4978.

Minneapolis-based jazz trio “The New Standards” will be performing at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Historic Paramount Theatre. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 on the day of the show, and $20 for students. Veterans will receive free popcorn and a drink with the purchase of a ticket. Friday, Nov. 10

• Landscapes in Oil – Painting the Softer Side of Nature, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Austin ArtWorks Center. With Joni Finnegan. For ages 16 and older. To register or for more information, call 507-434-0934.

• ArtRocks Open Jam Session, 7-9 p.m. at the Austin ArtWorks Center. The house band sets up and hosts the event. Players bring their guitars, basses, horns, sticks, keyboards, washboards, etc, and singers and songwriters bring themselves, their words, and their voices. The house band will ‘back’ individual jammers, and allow for groups of jammers to get up and play.  ArtRocks events are open to the public. Admission is free. Donations welcome. Saturday, Nov. 11

• Football and Cheerleading Camp, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Art Haas Stadium (Wescott Field). For grades 1-8, boys and girls – come out and meet former Vikings Carl Lee and Darrin Nelson along with former Houston Texan Jay Foreman and Baltimore Colts Dave Simonson, along with Vikings Cheerleaders.
