University of Minnesota research scientist Dr. Shawn Schottler will give a presentation entitled “Market Strategy to Create Crop Diversity to Improve Water Quality” at 7 p.m. Monday during the Izaak Walter League chapter meeting at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center Interpretive Center.

Perhaps best known for his research on the sources and fate of sediment impairing water quality, Schottler conducts water quality research at the St. Croix Watershed Research Station of the Science Museum of Minnesota.

Schottler also recognizes the basic role of economics in the challenge of improving and protecting water quality.

Without a market incentive for agriculture landowners to use cover crops, perennials, and other best management practices for water quality, landowners will not progress toward achieving water quality goals, Schottler says.

“Markets are the biggest possibility for changing water quality,” he said at a recent meeting.

Public is welcomed and encouraged to attend.  Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the presentation.
