Oman Owar Onyongo, 31, of Mapleview pleaded guilty to felony domestic assault as part of a plea agreement on Friday in Mower County District Court. A second charge of felony domestic assault will be dropped at the sentencing.
Onyongo initially pleaded not guilty to the charges in July.
According to the court complaint, officers responded to a call at 1:16 a.m. on July 5 at the Mandolin Apartments. They found a woman crying with a large bump near her right eye, but were unable to get much information from her because of a language barrier. A Gold Cross ambulance transported her to Mayo Clinic Health System – Austin, where medical officials classified her facial injury as “bodily harm.”
Officers spoke to Onyongo, who said he and the woman argued. He denied hitting her, claiming she was drunk and had fallen and hit her head.
A neighbor told police she heard the victim crying and Onyongo yelling at her to “shut up.” She said she heard the sounds of fighting, which she happened “a lot,” and she called the victim’s granddaughter, who then called police.
Ononyongo was taken to the Mower County Jail, then sent to Rochester to detox because his blood alcohol concentration was 0.296 percent. He was subsequently returned to jail.
Onyongo will be sentenced on Dec. 15.
