Lola J. Handahl, 89, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017, at her home in Austin.
Lola Joyce Wangen was born July 11, 1928, in rural Freeborn County, Minnesota, to Elvin and Marie (Kallestad) Wangen. She attended Blue Earth (Minnesota) High School. On May 7, 1955, Lola was united in marriage to Gordon Handahl. Their union was blessed with four children. Lola served as a caregiver for various people in the Austin area, in addition to her role as wife and mother. She was an amateur actress and loved music. Lola enjoyed attending plays, playing the keyboard, singing and dancing. Her other interests included reading, walking, and biking, especially to McDonald’s for coffee.Spending time with her family was especially important to her. Lola will be dearly missed by her friends and family.
Survivors include her daughter, Hali (Joseph) Mendez of Portland, Oregon; her sons, Kirk (Michelle) Handahl of Rochester, Minnesota, Brad Handahl of Burnsville, Minnesota, and Barry (Lori) Handahl of Austin; five grandchildren; her brothers, James Wangen of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Abdiel “Skip” Wangen of Blue Earth; sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Wangen of Austin, Arlene Wangen of Mankato Minnesota, Betty Warnke of Mankato, Audrey (John) Connor of Madison Lake, Minnesota; and brother-in-law, Bob (Bonnie) Handahl of Villa Hills, Kentucky. Lola was preceded in death by her parents, Elvin and Marie Wangen; her husband, Gordon in 1999; her brothers, Gene and George Wangen; and sister-in-law, Lucretia Wangen.
A memorial gathering will be held from 1-3 p.m. p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, at the Worlein Funeral Home in Austin. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to the Salvation Army or recipient of donor’s choice.
