Bernard Allen Underwood

Bernard Allen Underwood, 85, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Sept. 22, 2017. He passed away in the loving arms of family in Eaton Rapids, Michigan.

A graduate of Blooming Prairie (Minnesota) High School class of 1950, Bernard enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952 and proudly served his country at home and abroad for 26 years. Bernard and Lorraine (Rowe) were high school sweethearts and married on March 31, 1954. On active duty, he was stationed in Oregon, Michigan, Alabama, Texas, two tours in Colorado and two tours in Florida, and spent four unaccompanied tours overseas (Greenland, Formosa, Korea and Thailand).

After he retired, Bernard also worked at Peterson Air Force Base, NORAD, the Air Force Academy, and Fort Carson Army Base, all in Colorado Springs.

Bernard enjoyed both playing and watching sports. In high school, he participated in basketball, football, and baseball. Later in life, he enjoyed coaching his sons in basketball, baseball and football, and supported his daughters’ participation in cheerleading and all school activities.

His favorite teams were the Colts, Lakers, and Cubs.

Bernard enjoyed challenging opponents in pool, and most times came out on the winning end. His favorite pastimes included traveling around the country to spend time with family, long country drives, bird watching, leaf rides, camping and spending time with friends enjoying the country music at the Eaton Rapids Senior Center.

Bernard is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Margaret Underwood; Lorraine’s parents and family, whom he loved as his own; his loving grandson, Keaton Allison; sister, Roseanne; brother Lloyd; brother-in-laws, Robert Gatlin, Tom Birt and nephew, Richard Gatlin.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lorraine; children, Susan (Warren), Michigan; Paul (Mimi) Florida; Greg (Tammy), Kansas; Julie (Dan), Arizona; Jan (Tyler), Colorado; Stan, Michigan; and brother David (Jackie), Minnesota. Bernard leaves 17 loving grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Bernard will be remembered for his kind gentle nature, sharing his great sense of humor, always having a positive attitude, love of country music, and most of all his unending devotion to his family.

Skinner Funeral Home of Eaton Rapids was in charge of arrangements, including the service that took place in late September.
