Walk or run for a cause this weekend; 5K Your Way to benefit Women’s Leadership Initiative

The Women’s Leadership Initiative will be hosting the 5K Your Way Race and Fun Run/Walk on Saturday. All proceeds will go to the YMCA in Austin and the Women’s Leadership Initiative’s Backpack program to help fight childhood hunger.

Participants can opt to take part in the 5K run/walk or a 1 mile fun run/walk on the day of the event. All kids that participate in the 1 mile fun run/walk will receive gifts. Medals will be awarded to the overall male and female and top three participants in each age group in the 5K run/walk. Each participant will get a voucher for a free soda, beer or rail drink at B&J Bar and Grill.

The races will begin and end at Hormel Foods Corporate Office North.

Strollers are allowed during the run/walk, but no pets.

Registration costs $30 for adults, $20 per child 12 and under and $75 maximum per family household.

Same day registration begins at 8 a.m. The 1 mile fun run/walk begins at 9 a.m. and the 5K run/walk begins at 10 a.m.

Out of the Darkness Walk is for suicide prevention

The second annual Out of the Darkness Walk will also be held on Saturday at Lafayette Park.

The walk, hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention – Southeast Minnesota Chapter, is being held to raise awareness and funds for research, educational programs, public policy advocacy and support for those who have lost someone to suicide.

Same day registration will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The walk will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

• History for Half Pints: Clifford the Big Red Dog, 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Hormel Historic Home. Clifford is joining us for History for Half Pints in this free event for families. Program includes story time with Sweet Reads Book Store and photos with Clifford. Explore enhanced children’s learning stations throughout the house museum. • National Barrow Show Windsor Pork Chop Dinner, 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Plager Building, Mower County Fairgrounds. The meal includes a Windsor pork chop, coleslaw, baked beans, dinner roll and a beverage for $10 per person. The proceeds help defray costs associated with the 71st annual event, hosted by the Austin Area NBS Committee.

• 21st annual Mower County Humane Society Walk for Animals, 1 to 3:30 p.m. at Mill Pond. Annual fundraiser for the Mower County Humane Society. Registration begins at 1 p.m., walk at 2 p.m..
