RACINE — Christ said, “I am the bread of life.”

Racine United Methodist Church parishioners are hoping to bring life back to areas affected by the hurricanes through bread.

With the disasters that have unfolded in Texas, Louisiana, and now Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Community Wood Fire Oven in Racine will conduct a “dough raiser,” using its bread oven.

In a coordinated event with community ovens at White Bear Lake UMC, Our Savior’s Lutheran in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis, Harrison Neighborhood Association/Redeemer Lutheran Minneapolis, Hamline UMC on the campus of Hamline University, United Theological Seminary in New Brighton, and the Kingfield Neighborhood Association in Minneapolis, the groups are hoping to bake a total of 1,200 loaves of a Fabulous Oatmeal Wheat Bread.

Organizers said it is an ideal use of all the community ovens and a way for the community to participate  in providing funds for a catastrophic event.

The group is asking $10 per loaf of bread. If all of the community ovens are able to bake the maximum number of loaves for the baking period the combined seven ovens would be able to potentially raise $12,000 in one day to benefit those affected by the hurricanes.

The oven in Racine has set a goal to bake and sell 150 loaves during its baking time.

To order bread from the Racine Community Wood Fire Oven, email your order along with contact information to goeldi1127@aol.com or call the church at 507-378-4801. Leave your contact information and order on the voice mail.

Money raised and any additional donations that people might make will be donated directly to relief agencies by each of the ovens individually but results will be shared with each location.

A “Baking With A Purpose” event will be held on Saturday, Sept 16.  The oven will be loaded at 9 a.m. and bread can begin to be picked up at around 10 a.m. Visitors are welcome to come and observe this baking event until noon. They ask that all orders be picked up at the church by 2 p.m.

The oven is located in the parking lot of Racine United Methodist Church at 401 East Main Street, Racine.
