Margaret A. “Muggins” Whiting, 90, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, passed away Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Hospital-Rochester, Saint Marys Campus.

Margaret Ann was born Oct. 21, 1926, in Austin, Minnesota, to Carl and Mae (Hansley) Peterson. She graduated with the class of 1944 from Blooming Prairie High School, and went on to earn her bachelor of science degree in sociology in 1948 from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.

Following graduation, she went to work in Tucson, Arizona, before returning to Blooming Prairie in 1964. On June 29, 1974, she was united in marriage to John Harlow Whiting at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie. For 18 years Margaret enjoyed hosting her daughter Chris and a group of friends for 6:30 a.m. coffee each morning during the week. She was also very instrumental with artistic design for her and John’s business, Whiting Custom Framing. Margaret was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie, loved sacred music, and was a wonderful mother. Margaret and John enjoyed spending time during the summers at their cabin on Dewey Lake near Chisholm, Minnesota.

She is survived by her husband, John of Blooming Prairie; daughter, Christine (Tom) Butler of Blooming Prairie; son, Peter (Jean) Wilkinson of Plymouth; grandchildren, Howard Butler, Meghan Butler, Carl Butler, and Jon Butler; great-grandchildren, Tommy, Jack, Brynn, Brecken, Madeline, Brayden, and Brooks. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Mae Peterson; brothers, Allan Charles Peterson and Thomas Christian Peterson; and by Isabelle Thorson, who was raised as Margaret’s sister by Carl and Mae.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017 at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie with Pastor Heidi Heimgartner officiating. Margaret’s family will greet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday for one hour prior to the service, at First Lutheran Church.  Interment will follow at First Lutheran Cemetery in rural Blooming Prairie.
