The Austin girls soccer team snapped out of its scoring slump as it was able to pick up the momentum early to get its first victory of the season in a 4-0 win over Winona in Art Hass Stadium Tuesday.

The Packers (1-2 overall, 1-1 Big Nine) took an early lead when Morgan Raymond scored on a breakaway on a pass from Emily Hegna to make it 1-0 just three minutes into the game and Hannah Quandt scored on a rebound off a Sydney Marsh kick eight minutes later to make it 2-0.

“We’ve been trying really hard to get some goals, especially early on,” Raymond said. “To be able to do that early on was good.”

Cassity Nangle picked up the shutout in net for the Packers as she stopped seven shots and Austin had 11 shots on goal. Emily Hegna knocked in a 30 yard free kick to put the Packers up 3-0 late in the second half and Isabel Leuer put the game away when she scored with 12:23 left in the contest.

Leuer said the win gives Austin some much needed confidence after the Packers had been outscored by a total of 10-0 in its first two games.

“We’ve been able to do it in practice, but tonight we proved that we can do it in a game,” Leuer said. “This gave us a chance to prove it. This helped us build as a team.”

Winona (2-3 overall, 1-2 Big Nine) wasn’t able to get a lot of great looks at the net as the Packer defense clamped down.

Austin head coach Jake Levisen said the fast start was key to turning things in Austin’s direction.

“It was nice to start a game with fire and this was a big boost to have our first home game. The crowd support was great,” Levisen said. “That first goal was huge. It showed the girls that if they keep on doing their passing, things are going to happen. It also showed that you have to come out with intensity.”
