Salvation Army offers back-to-school assist; Program includes clothing and basic school supplies

With the start of school just around the corner, the Salvation Army will be holding a back to school assistance event from 1 to 4 p.m. on Monday and 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday at the Salvation Army Family Store and Donation Center.

Because schools are requiring fewer supplies and more fees for computers, field trips and other needs, the Salvation Army has changed the program to include two changes of clothing for each child in need of back to school help. Children will also be eligible for basic school supplies, including a backpack.

To help with the event, the Salvation Army is asking for donations of new socks and underwear and gently used shoes, clothing and backpacks.

Students from kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible. To apply for assistance, the head of the household must be present from 1 to 4 p.m. on Monday or 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday. Required items are a form of identification and verification from the school for each child for whom assistance is requested. Verification can include a school-issued identification, free lunch acceptance letter or school schedule.

A completed new client form and signed release is required for families who have not been to the Salvation Army for assistance since 2015. Families applying for aid must show identification and have verification for each family member, including adults.

If you are uncertain if you are on file, please contact the Salvation Army prior to the distribution time at 507-437-4566.
