James “Jim” B. Hagelund, 77

James “Jim” B. Hagelund, 77, of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Hospitals – Saint Marys Campus in Rochester, Minnesota.

Jim was born March 22, 1940, in Austin to Jonas and Mina (Hovland) Hagelund. He attended Austin High School and was a member of the class of 1958. Jim married Joan (Fraser) Blanchfield on March 30, 1979, at Crane Community Chapel. He was a self-employed house painter and a caregiver. He served as an election judge for the city of Austin and Mower County, he was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and he was a lifelong Democrat.

Jim enjoyed biking, watching the Twins and Vikings, playing pool at the Vets and playing bingo. He liked to read and keep abreast of the news. He passed on his love of trains and fishing to his grandson, Matt.

Jim is survived by his mother, Mina “Mitzi” Hagelund Plath, Austin; siblings, Marlene Schmidt, Okoboji, Iowa; Mary Jo Dobson, Nelson, Wisconsin; Jon (Jeanine Hartman) Hagelund, New Mexico; and Karen (Jim Peterson) Hagelund, San Francisco, California; stepdaughter, Lisa Bandel, Northfield, Minnesota; stepgrandchildren, Matt (Natasha) Blanchfield, Milaca, Minnesota, and Katie Bandel, Webster, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Anita Deyo, Austin.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jonas Hagelund; and his wife, Joan, in 1996.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Rev. Susan Rector Li officiating. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Tuesday.
